Susie, who by now you should all know as my coworker, sent me an email about Chocri! I can't wait to have an excuse or a party to order my own yummy chocolate bars!

chocri is a German startup, founded in September 2008, but launched in the US in January 2010. What we do is we allow you to customize your own chocolate bar here on our website. You get to choose a base chocolate white, dark or milk chocolate), and then your favorites out of more than 100 toppings. Those can be nuts and dried fruit, but they can also be real gold flakes, roasted almonds, pretzel, chive rolls, jalapenos... you name it! We hand-make the bars in Germany, and ship them to you.

We want you to eat chocolate and fully enjoy the good feeling it creates, hence we use only the best ingredients, such as organic, fair trade chocolate from Belgium. We also donate a percentage of our revenues to DIV Kinder, an organization that supports children at the Ivory Coast, and you are free to add your own donation at checkout.

Co-owners and friends Franz and Micha have experimented with chocolate making since childhood. However, the main inspiration behind chocri did not surface until 2008 when Franz needed to find the perfect gift for his girlfriend’s birthday. After many unsuccessful searches and unsatisfactory ideas, the genius thought struck him – he would decorate a chocolate bar with his girlfriend’s favorite toppings! With his girlfriend’s very particular taste, he would never be able to find just the right combination in a chocolate shop and neither would she! White chocolate with gummy bears and dried nuts and fruit was the end result and his girlfriend was overjoyed. And that was what you might call the first chocri.
Shortly after that first success, one of Franz’s friends asked him if he would make a specialized chocolate as a gift for his mother. It was only a matter of time before Franz and Micha’s little hobby turned into big business and on September 1, 2008, was established online.
Aside from being a chocolate company of the highest standards, chocri also is involved in philanthropic organizations and to read more about that, please take a look at our blog.

Fair Trade Chocolate

Here at chocri, we are obsessed with chocolate. How the ingredients necessary for making chocolate are grown, handled, produced, and sold is of great concern for us. Cacao, the main ingredient in chocolate, is usually grown in third-world countries where unethical working conditions and farming practices are common.
It has always been essential for us at chocri to produce chocolate ethically. We believe that it is inexcusable to produce chocolate in such a way in that it causes suffering for people in some of the world’s poorest countries. Quality to us means not only excellent-tasting chocolate, but also fair working practices at every level of chocolate production. For this reason, we offer only Fair Trade or organic chocolate. We also sponsor DIV Kinder-Kooperation, a German-based child welfare organization, in order to support the communities that produce cacao

Although chocolate was originally developed in Latin and South America, the Ivory Coast of West Africa makes up a huge percent of current cacao production. With over 1,3 million tons of cacao beans harvested, the Ivory Coast region produces almost three times the amount of cacao as the second-highest cacao-producing country, Indonesia. Every third cacao bean comes from the Ivory Coast. The economy of this region is heavily dependent upon the cacao trade, as evident by the 1999 civil war that occurred after a slump in the cacao market contributed to political instability.
Many small farms (1-10 Hectors) are unable to cope with decreases in cacao prices and in order to remain in business the farms utilize child labor. The dependence upon the price of cacao increases poverty in these nations, directly impacting the future of the country’s children, who often have no chance to receive education.

DIV-Kinder (which stands for Deutsch-Ivorische-Verein and means German-Ivory Association) is a Christian organization that cares for the needs of homeless and orphaned children of the Ivory Coast. Their primary interest is to provide the children with shelter and supervision. The organization’s employees work directly in these countries and make sure that donations and supplies from Germany are transferred to the homes for children.
1% of every chocolate bar purchased goes directly to the children of the Ivory Coast. So far, the first major donation project we financed was very successful and you are welcome to read more about this project and future ones on our blog.
